For Family History material, our information is
recorded on Familia <www.familia.org.uk/main.html>,
which itself is also accessible through the Library website www.readinglibraries.org.uk.
Follow the link to Local Studies, then to Family History.
This page is being updated (March 2002) to included the 1901
census, and to make some other changes.
A long time ago, 1958 to be precise, the Catalogue
of the Local Studies Library was published. A supplement was
added in 1967. Since then, of course, many items have been
added to the collection, and most are on the main library
catalogue. Again, this is available on the Library website.
For items not on the main library
catalogue, including non-book material (photographs, estate catalogues,
maps...) the only catalogues are those held in the library.
But - we have undergone a major listing exercise and have
created an enormous holdings list where all such material
is being brought together. Maps are not yet included, but
in some cases we have even recorded the fact that information is held
somewhere else. It is a working tool,
designed to make it easier for non-specialist staff to look after the
Local Studies Library, but it would be possible to print
off a record of material listed for any location.
