'Life on the River Thames' - Talk series - Fifth talk of five (Thu. 6 Sep, 2018 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder: a cross-border tale of Berkshire and Oxfordshire skulduggery: with Mark Davies

In 1787, an elderly man was robbed and murdered after leaving Abingdon’s Michaelmas Fair.  Primitive police resources and the reluctance of local residents to ‘get involved’ left the case unsolved for four years.  The evidence which eventually emerged exposed a wide-ranging, criminal network cemented by marriage alliances and supported by some of Abingdon’s leading men.

Mark Davies is a local historian, walks and river-cruises guide, speaker, writer and author of The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder: A True-life Tale of Crime and Punishment.

TICKETS:  £5 (members £4) includes tea and cake.

Advanced booking is highly recommended, but you can pay at the door (subject to availability).
