Natter sessions

Welcome to this introduction to the informal discussion groups organised and hosted by Berkshire Family History Society.

How the sessions work

Whenever and wherever society members and other family historians meet, useful discussions generally follow.

DNA and family history A new, facilitated discussion group for those wanting to get the most from their DNA test results met for the initial get-together in April.

This group meets quarterly at The Centre for Heritage and Family History in Reading, and the next meeting is on Saturday, 27th July at 2.30 pm. Initial sessions will benefit from the expertise of international DNA expert, Debbie Kennett.

There is a nominal £3 charge/session for those who attend. This also covers tea/coffee and cake — and is payable on the day.

Tuesday Evenings at The Centre The society also holds a regular monthly evening session at The Centre for Heritage and Family History.

Chad Hanna and Gillian Stevens lead informal discussions on family history topics on the first Tuesday evening of each month from 6.45 pm at The Centre. Topics are varied, and usually agreed in advance by those taking part in the session the month before. See Natter Session Programme menu item on the left for more details.

FREE to attend, with a charge for refreshments. Come for one session of particular interest, or become 'a regular' and enjoy meeting up every month.  No booking needed simply turn up.

A good discussion needs just two things:

  • A starting subject to interest and engage everyone present — maybe parish registers, or The 1939 Register, or wills and probate documents ....;
  • And some family historians — one or two of whom have more experience, and are willing to talk about and share their research ideas and findings.

Discussion groups are a great way to learn more about research techniques and sources that will benefit your family history research.
