IMPORTANT The society library is currently being reorganised after the move from Yeomanry House in November 2017.

The society is now based in central Reading at The Centre for Heritage and Family History on the second floor of Reading's Central Library

The society’s library holds thousands of items, only some of which are Berkshire related. Other material relates to English counties, and to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Library holdings include:

International Genealogical Index (1988) on microfiche for Great Britain

CDs of Berkshire Monumental Inscriptions (MIs), overseers’ papers, militia lists, directories and more

Local history and genealogy books for UK counties, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and some other countries

National Index of Parish Registers volumes for most English counties

Family history reference books covering all aspects of research, from books for beginners to key reference sources, such as the Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, and specialist titles that include criminal records, education, electoral registers, electoral rolls and poll books, local history, maps and cartography, military, occupations, palaeography, photographs, Poor Law, surnames, wills ....

Directories include biographical, trade, professional, military, clerical and school

Published family histories/pedigrees and a large number of donated personal compilations and hand-written documents

Copies of the society magazine, the Berkshire Family Historian, from 1975 to the present, and earlier Windsor, Slough and District FHS publications that pre-date that society’s amalgamation with Berkshire Family History Society
