Whatever your level of experience, researchers and historians always look to widen knowledge and deepen understanding, and to improve research techniques and keep them right up to date. Putting information into better historical context is important too.

This approach underpins the society’s events and educational programmes and initiatives.

Use the menu on the left of the screen to find out what’s coming up at The Centre for Heritage and Family History and across the county.

There is a varied and growing programme of activities and events to meet your research needs and interests – and  further ideas for future topics are welcome at any time.

Important: before you book

Welcome! Here you will find helpful information to make your booking simple and straightforward.

Events and activities at The Centre for Heritage and Family History are much in demand. They are very popular. Tickets and places often sell out quickly.

For talks, courses, workshops and walks, numbers are limited (the numbers  are different!) and early booking is strongly advised.

Book early. It means that you can be certain of your place and you avoid possible disappointment later when an event becomes 'sold out'.

Savings for current society members

For ticketed events, if you are a current member you enjoy a useful saving on your own ticket price. Use the details and current coupon codes in the most recent Berkshire Family Historian. (Find a digital copy in the Members' Area of this site)

A significant saving on your event ticket is just one of many benefits enjoyed when you join the society.

How to book

Choose the event/events that you would like to attend. Start by clicking on 'Events' in the main menu (on the left), then click on the tab (or tabs) of interest to you that appear in the sub-menu.

Clicking on any sub-menu item takes you to a general article that tells more about that group of events. It also reveals a 'Programme tab' which will lead you to details of available events of the type in which you are interested.

From that 'Programme' link, you can explore a specific event and go on to book your place and pay online.

Workshops and courses

Welcome to this introduction to workshops and courses arranged by Berkshire Family History Society.

Workshop2 website

Within the Events programme, the society organises and runs a range of workshops and courses throughout the year at The Centre for Heritage and Family History in Reading.

Everyone can benefit from these — from beginners to more experienced family historians. And you do not need to be a member to take part. Find out which courses and workshops will be taking place in the next few months.

Events leaflet: April-June and Events leaflet: July-September Both open as a PDF in a new window.

NOTE: Courses and workshops are frequently fully booked within days of dates being announced. A 'waiting list' is kept — in case anyone should cancel an earlier booking — and so that further course dates can be advised in good time.

There are Saturday morning workshop sessions too — on topics that can help you in unlocking  your family’s past.

In 2019, as well as a course for beginners in family history, the society has run, or will run, a course on Understanding Old Handwriting, and a two-session course on Basic Latin for family historians.

Workshops have covered/will cover Merchant Navy Records, Census records of England and Wales, and Wills and other probate documents (pre and post 1858), Scrapbooking for family historians and Census records of Scotland, Ireland and Overseas.

Earlier workshops examined online research with family history websites, specific record types, with census records, parish registers, school records and military records, and that very important matter of Writing up your family history.

Given the gathering importance of DNA testing in family history research, in addition to the DNA discussion group, the society has run workshops on  Working with DNA test results and Autosomal DNA too.

Places on courses and workshops are limited and must be booked and paid for in advance, with refreshments included in the cost.

Walks and visits

Walking website

Regular walks and tours are organised from The Centre for Heritage and Family History. These link with the quarterly theme of the Thursday afternoon talks.

Some of the society's local branches arrange walks and visits too, usually in the spring and summer months.

Walks and visits can bring to life aspects of an area's social history. They can also introduce researchers to new ideas, and to opportunities to find and engage with resources that will help them to unlock their family’s past.

For walks and tours, you must buy a modestly priced ticket in advance.

Walks and tours are proving to be very popular events. Places are limited and generally sell out very quickly.

To secure your place, early booking is strongly recommended.

Events leaflet: April-June and Events leaflet: July -September (Both will open as a PDF in a new window)

Note: The tour on 23rd June sold out almost immediately. Further tours are planned for Saturday, 20th July and Sunday, 27th October. Look out for details.

The society aims always to arrange talks and visits that are accessible for everyone, but some destinations and venues may not be suitable for those with special access needs.
