Search Findmypast, The 1939 Register, The Genealogist, the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry (worldwide edition). Delve into websites and many other resources. The library alone holds 5,000 items – only 20 per cent of which are Berkshire related.

Researching your family history

Berkshire Family History Society has established The Centre for Heritage and Family History on the second floor of Reading Central Library.

The Centre for Heritage and Family History delivers a great new space for society members and the public to use and to enjoy. It offers a lively meeting place and a friendly focal point for everyone with an interest in heritage and history — including family history, local history and social history.

It provides the best family history research facility in the area, and is FREE to visit. In The Centre's Research Zone, you have FREE ACCESS to Findmypast, The Genealogist, British Newspaper Archives and Ancestry Worldwide Edition — the most useful subscription websites — and to much more (online and offline), backed by the informed advice and support of society volunteers.

    Who Do You Think You Are? A SPECIAL OFFER
    When you plan your own research this autumn, get a flying start with the help of Berkshire Family History Society – wherever your ancestors came from. Come along to the society’s Research Centre in Reading where volunteers can help you to find the information you need – although they do not carry out the research for you. If you are not yet a society member, print this offer page and bring it with you as a first-time visitor to the Research Centre. Hand in the page and your ‘£2 temporary membership fee’ will be waived (offer runs to 30th September 2009).
    So, drop in soon – to discover a few of those stories just waiting for you in your family tree.
