Have You Done Your Homework

Given by Marjorie Moore

On Monday 10 March 2003

Margery Evans provided the following summary:

Marjorie told us to do essential homework before leaving home. Most people do not devote enough time to serious preparation before going out for the day. Preparation can save a lot of wasted time at record offices.

She also advised:

  • Preparing a list of all you are seeking at each repository and colour coding lists – birth red etc. as PRO and FRC
  • Always enclose an S.A.E or overseas reply coupon when writing to anyone.
  • To always send a copy of your family tree to relatives. If you have difficulty in obtaining information from relatives, add something inaccurate to the tree, it may jog their memory.
  • Make a note of the dates of the various census

Marjorie told us she had recently been approached by someone who had researched their family tree for over 20 years. This ladies uncle and her father had not spoken for years. When she managed to speak to the uncle she found he had a family bible and lots of information, so have you exhausted every one of your family members?

This was a talk that passed a large amount of useful information to the membership.
