Visit to Vale and Downland Museum, Wantage

at Wantage on Mon, 10th Jun 2002

Jill Muir provided the following summary:

Tucked away down a quite street in Wantage, is a great little place called The Vale & Downland Museum. Built around a 17th Century Cloth merchant house, it holds a lot of information on the town of Wantage and surrounding countryside, the Vale of White Horse.

Our guide, volunteer and Trustee, Bill Fuller, took us around and we learnt about the cultural heritage of the area. We watched videos narrated by Sir David Attenborough which you can purchase from the Museum on CDRom.

We had a 'ride' in a tram, and viewed old time shops of Wantage, bringing back to some of us, quite distinctive memories of times past. The museum, has been nationally acclaimed as an outstanding example of community partnership, and has a little café which is Egon Ronay recommended and it is great place to take visiting friends and relations for a day out.

If you want to learn more, their web site is at: http://www.wantage.com/museum/

For the Abingdon Branch though, a good evening out and one which we shall individually visit again soon.
