This was a very
interesting talk for those who wish to use the
Internet for genealogy purposes. Sue is very
knowledgeable on how to move around various net
directories, and advised trying many sites, plus
sending lots of e-mails, to people who have
connections to names you are searching for,
however unlikely they seem to you.
For those who do
not have a computer of their own she pointed out
that a free Internet session can be booked at the
local library.
She advised a
good anti-virus protection program, and to ensure
that it is up-dated at least once a week.
Sue also told us
how to:-
- Make our own
homepage.
- How to take
shortcuts to the name that we are
searching for.
- How to
find the name quickly in a
long document .
- About
advance searches.
She mentioned
some of the net directories, such as Google (www.google.co.uk) and GenUKI (www.genuki.org.uk) which are excellent
sites for searching for relatives.
Sue gave an
example of a family that she researched for
cousins of her husband who live in America. She
had the name, plus occupation. From there she was
able to trace him, and other members of his
family way back to royalty, all in two days,
using the Internet. The story of how she achieved
it, plus the luck that she had, made this a truly
fascinating talk which was enjoyed by a larger
than normal attendance of the membership.
