Print

This Berkshire Marriages CD provides over 525,000 names of grooms, brides, fathers and witnesses in over 170,000 marriages recorded in the marriage registers and Bishops’ Transcripts of Berkshire parishes. Volunteers undertake transcribing on behalf of Berkshire Family History Society. Work will continue until all available Berkshire Marriages have been recorded.

This new edition adds fifty more parishes and many later 19th and 20th century records. Transcriptions often reveal vital detail, not just of brides and grooms but about parents, witnesses - often relatives - and of ages, occupations, addresses and additional register notes.  Earliest transcriptions date from 1538, while some modern transcriptions are as late as 2010 (exact time spans vary from place to place). Later entries usually give more information that their 16th and 17th century counterparts. Full details of parishes and periods covered can be found at www.berksfhs.org.uk

Berkshire Record Office (Reading) holds original parish registers for the pre-1974 county of Berkshire (including the Vale of the White Horse).

Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre (Chippenham) holds surviving early Bishops’ Transcripts for Berkshire (to 1835) many of which were orginally transcribed by Roger Blackman where the original registers were deficient.
