Designed to be browsable and easy to search, this CD offers a detailed index of the impressive collection of 39,000 probate documents (dates range from 1480 to 1857) of the Archdeaconry of Berkshire.
The CD has nine finding aids, three overview datasets and holds details of 38,000 Berkshire men and women who left a will – or property to be assigned to others on their death. It gives surnames, forenames, dates of probate, occupations, place names, and document types, with extra information available in many cases.
In this context, Berkshire is the pre-1974 county, and includes the parishes of North Berkshire and the Vale of the White Horse.
