A word on the National Burial Index (NBI)
About 70 per cent only of entries now included in Berkshire Burials, 11th Edition (December 2012) appear, in much abbreviated form, in the Third Edition of the National Burial Index (February 2010). The NBI is just that - an Index.
Transcriptions in Berkshire Burials offer much more than the NBI's basic content. For most entries, Berkshire Burials delivers extra detail such as status, address, occupation, other information (sometimes cause or place of death, coroner's inquest and similar data) where recorded in original registers or Bishops' Transcripts. While the NBI may summarise over 18 million burial records across England and Wales, its coverage by individual county is highly variable.
