Bracknell & Wokingham Branch - 'OSS Station Victor, Hurley's Secret War' talk by Philip Williams

During the Second World War, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), forerunner to the CIA, operated a communication station on top of the ridge overlooking the village of Hurley in Berkshire.

Its role was to receive coded messages sent by Secret Agents working across occupied Europe and to pass information on to Allied Commanders in London. It played a crucial role after D-Day in identifying locations of SS Panzer Divisions heading towards the beachhead, and was the only station to operate agents within the German Reich. Station VICTOR was shut down in September 1945 and remained a secret until the recent declassification of the operational war diary.

Bracknell & Wokingham Branch Annual Meeting followed by 'The Duke and the Miner's Daughter' talk by Tony Hadland

Family tradition said that Tony’s great-grandfather, Thomas Young, was the illegitimate son of a Duke.  Thomas’ mother was the teenage daughter of a miner in the Forest of Dean.  Using techniques you too can employ, Tony discovered that truth is even more interesting than legend.
