'The English Civil War' - The Place Names of Berkshire - a talk by Dr David Peacock (Wed. 23 May, 2018 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

Afternoon talks filled with history and cake.

Five fortnightly talks each quarter - many around a theme - this quarter 'The English Civil War'.

In a break from this quarter’s theme of the Civil War, we are delighted to welcome local historian and author, Dr David Peacock, to talk about the fascinating subject of place names. David is a former teacher of politics and history at Padworth College, and also gives evening classes on local history at Newbury College and Reading University. He is Chairman of the Newbury Society. What's in a name? Rather more than might at first be apparent if you start to look into the meaning of local place names. David will explain the origins of many of Berkshire’s names and explain the ways in which to identify where place names originate from, drawing on examples from across the county.

Tickets: £5 non-members or £4 members per talk.  This includes tea or coffee and cake.  Book all five sessions in a quarter for the bargain price of four.  Booking in advance is highly recommended, but turn up and you can pay on the day, if places are still available.

Contact The Booking Administrator with any queries.

The preceding talk in this series is on 9th May, and the fifth an final talk is on Wednesday, 6th June.
