Reading Branch: Putting Berkshire on the Map by John Leighfield (Thu. 26 Sep, 2019 7:15 pm - 9:30 pm)

John’s talk will give us a brief introduction to mapping from prehistoric times up to the earliest, primitive maps of Britain.  We’ll be taken from the first extant map of Britain with genuine cartographic content and the revolution in mapping in the 16th century (particularly Saxton and Speed), into the 18th century (driven by a prize given by the RSA), through the 19th century (the Ordnance Survey) and end with the transformation in mapping brought about by the technological revolution of the late 20th and the 21st centuries.

This talk is heavily illustrated with pictures of all the key maps that show Berkshire from 1574 onwards and will be accompanied by a display of a number of the key maps that have been discussed.

John Leighfield has been collecting maps (of Oxfordshire and adjoining counties and of Cornwall) since 1966 and regularly lectures on the topic.
