Berkshire Family History Society will again be supporting the West Surrey FHS Open Day at Woking Leisure Centre, Kingfield Road, Woking, GU22 9BA on Saturday, 4th November.

All society publications will be available, including the latest Berkshire Baptisms, Marriages and Burials CDs. (Earlier editions can be 'updated' at this event.) There are new Parish Register and MIs CDs too. The ever-popular Berkshire Maps, Overseers, Probate, Military and War Memorials CDs will also be on sale.

Only Berkshire Family History Society covers the entire old County of Berkshire, including parishes of the Vale of the White Horse and those of North Berkshire around Abingdon. (Berkshire Record Office holds the original records for these parishes).

The society's Research Centre — Berkshire's foremost facility for family history research — is next door to Berkshire Record Office at Yeomanry House, with free access to five major online resources. From here you can search for your ancestors anywhere in the world.

Bring your research questions to Woking, search the society's databases and transcriptions for your Berkshire ancestors, and get informed help and advice.

The Kennet and Avon Canal: The Water Road to Bath by Richard Poad (Thu. 30 Nov, 2017 7:15 pm - 9:15 pm)

Richard Poad is Chairman of Maidenhead Heritage Centre and a retired airline pilot.  He has owned a narrowboat for almost 40 years and says that a speed of 4 miles a fortnight is a perfect way to combat the stresses of modern life.

In 2010, he made a round trip to Bath from his home mooring on the Thames, a voyage that took 17 days in each direction.  In this fully illustrated talk, Richard invites his audience to travel the 100 miles from Reading to Bath with him. He discusses the origins of the Kennet and Avon Canal, notes the arguments over its route, looks at its designer's great engineering and architectural achievements, and admires the landscapes through which it passes.
