'Shops & Businesses' 3rd in Talk Series (Thu. 8 Aug, 2019 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

Reading's Old Shops: with Ann Smith

Jacksons, Langstons and Tuttys are familiar shop names to people in Reading.  But do you remember Hawkes Ironmongers or Cook's Dairy and Farm Equipment?  This talk will look at shops from the 19th century to the present day, and how shopping has changed over the years.

For those attending who wish to do some family history research while visiting The Centre, the Research Zone computers will be open from 1 pm.

TICKETS £5 (Member £4) includes tea/coffee and cake or book all five talks in the series for the discounted price of £20 (Member £16). Advance booking is recommended but you can pay on the door (subject to availability).

Members can obtain the discount using the coupon code published in their current Berkshire Family Historian.

Ann is the former local studies lead at Readng Central Library and the author of 100 Years of Shops in Reading.  The walk will take in the locations of some of the town's old businesses.

Jack of Newbury: with Dr David Peacock

Jack of Newbury (John Winchcombe) was producing cloth on an industrial scale in and around Newbury during Henry VIII's reign. It brought him immense wealth and considerable status.  A contemporary of Shakespeare muddled his life story, but Jack was a historical figure of national importance.  Come and hear local historian Dr David Peacock, unravel the story of this colourful and important character.
