Natter sessions

Welcome to this introduction to the informal discussions organised and hosted by Berkshire Family History Society.

How the sessions work

Whenever and wherever society members and other family historians meet, useful discussions follow.

The society organises a regular monthly evening session at The Centre for Heritage and Family History (and, potentially, at any other suitable venue, including coffee shops, pubs and members' houses).

Chad Hanna and Gillian Stevens lead informal discussions on family history topics on the first Tuesday evening of each month (except for August) from 6.45 pm at The Centre for Heritage and Family History in Reading. Monthly topics vary and are usually chosen by agreement by those researchers taking part in the session the month before. See the Natter Session Programme menu item on the left for more details.

FREE to attend, there is just a small charge for refreshments. You can come for one session of particular interest, or become 'a regular' and enjoy them every month. Simply turn up – no booking needed.

A good discussion needs only two things:

  • A starting subject that interests and engages everyone present — for example parish registers, or The 1939 Register, or wills and probate documents; and.
  • Some family historians — one or two of whom have more experience, and are willing to talk about and share their research ideas and findings.

It is a great way to learn more about research techniques and sources that will benefit your family history research.

Discussion often moves on from an original theme, especially once family historians start to share and exchange their particular (and sometimes specialised) experiences.
