Welcome to this introduction to the workshops and courses arranged by Berkshire Family History Society.

As part of the Events programme, the society runs a range of workshops and courses throughout the year at The Centre for Heritage and Family History in Reading. Everyone can benefit from these — from beginners to more experienced family historians.

During 2019, the society expects to run further beginners' courses in family history research.

(NOTE: These are frequently fully booked within days of dates being announced. A 'waiting list' is kept — in case anyone cancels a booking — and so that any future course dates can be advised in good time.)

There are Saturday morning workshop sessions too — on topics that can help you in unlocking  your family’s past.

The first sessions of 2019 include a three-session course on Understanding Old Handwriting, and workshops on Merchant Navy Records, Census records of England and Wales, and Wills and other probate documents (pre and post 1858).

Workshops in 2018 looked at online research with family history websites, specific record types, with census records, parish registers, school records and military records, and at the important subject of Writing up your family history.

Given a demand for DNA workshops, the society has run workshops on  Working with DNA test results and Autosomal DNA too.

Places on courses and workshops are limited and must be booked and paid for in advance, with refreshments included in the cost.
